Energy: For the first time in three months from July to September figures showed that electricity was produced from renewable energy. In the middle year of 2019, records showed that 38.9 per cent energy was produced by wind solar, hydro and other renewable.

More than 38.8 per cent energy is produced from gas. The record of the business and energy department shows that 1 per cent is produced by coal. There were very low – carbon energy and for that reason a new of 57.3 per cent was reached. Strong levels of generations were the outcome because of the low output from nuclear reactors.

Statistics shows that ongoing switch away from fossil fuels namely Coal. For cleaner sources of energy the government came to the decision to take action and get it all settle.

After the election victory the committee on Climate change wrote to Borris Johnson, telling him to deliver 40 gigawatts of the offshore wind by 2030. Also that the producing needs to be cut in some areas, transport, industry, heating homes and agriculture.

In 2050 the government would like to reduce the greenhouse gas. Almost 20 per cent of our energy is produced by wind.

Eskom has recently came out and issued stern warnings about possible disconnections to municipalities situated in the Manguang Metropilitan municipality.

This comes after heavy pressure from National Treasury, who imposed municipal debt recovery as a mandatory condition to it’s R59bn life-line, thus the disconnection warnings. This “bail-out”, was signed off by President Cyril Ramaphosa to assist Eskom repay it’s interest. The group debt burden amounts to some R450bn

The municipalities recently threatened with disconnection by Eskom, are Bloemfontein, Mafuba and Mantsopa. This comes after repeated failure to adhere to or honor payment agreements. These were agreed to by the municipalities and Eskom itself. So, what exactly are Eskom threatening to do if these municipalities do not pay up?

Eskom said that they would implement the following disconnection actions; Disconnecting the electricity supply to these municipalities between the times 06:00 and 20:00 during weekdays. As well as disconnections on the weekends following the 3rd December. However, they would be allowing power to be supplied over-night. An amount of 8 hours would be allowed for this to take place.

In other news, disconnections would also be facing the city of Soweto and some parts of the greater Gauteng area. This comes after investigations into meter tampering, as well as non-payment of electricity bills. Eskom says that out of the 180 000 electricity meters in Soweto, 120 000 were found to be tampered with. While in other regions of Gauteng, 490 000 out of the 760 000 energy meters, were found to have been tampered with.

Andre de Ruyter, has officially been announced as new Eskom CEO. But who is he, I am sure you would like to know a little bit more about Eskom’s new CEO, who will be charged with the “unbundling” of Eskom into three separate entities. So, who is this new CEO? We take a brief look back at the 50 year old’s accomplishes.

Currently employed as the CEO at NAMPAK, the largest packaging company Africa. He has been employed in this role for the past 5 years. He has a LLB and MBA, from the university of South Africa and Pretoria respectively.

He has spent more than 20 years with SASOL in senior management roles and has worked in their energy and chemicals industries. This included overseeing work in the US, Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique, Germany and China.

The 50 year old has had an amazing career inside the boardroom for quite a number of years. However, the task he faces in his new role requires harder work than he’s arguably ever had to deal with before.

So what was the reaction like to the news? Below we note some of the reactions on the appointment:

Political Parties

ANC – “The responsibility accepted by Mr De Ruyter is one that must be shared by all South Africans whose well-being depends on the well-being of the energy utility.”

DA – “With experience in both the private and public sectors, he has a wealth of experience and we implore upon him to use this experience to set Eskom on the right course to recovery,”

EFF, unsurprisingly dismissed the appointment – as “anti-transformation and racist”, calling it “a clear demonstration of deliberate intent to collapse Eskom to rationalise privatisation”.

Gwede Mantashe, minister of mineral resources and energy has let the cat out the bag at a round table recently. He says that the South African government is looking at nuclear energy solutions in the long-term energy strategy.

Under former state president Jacob Zuma’s administration, the then minister of energy tried to push through a nuclear energy deal with Russian energy company, Rostom, which, had it succeeded, would have effectively bankrupted the country’s coffers. Civil society organisations challenged the deal in court and won, and it was finally shelved when Cyril Ramaphosa became president.

To this end, Mantashe commented, “The fact that we suspected corruption doesn’t mean that nuclear is irrelevant for the country in 2019.” South Africa still remains the only country on the African continent with a commercial nuclear power plant. The Koeberg nuclear power plant, which houses two nuclear reactors, generates 5% of South Africa’s electricity productions.

On the country’s future power plans, Mantashe emphasized the importance of undoing the tensions between renewable energy and coal in securing energy solutions that are required to meet demands. With regards to this, he explained that there are no full commitment by the government to move towards nuclear at this stage, but rather a commitment to explore all energy options.

We all hope this vision is expedited in a move to stabilize the country’s power grid.

Eskom chief executive officer Phakamani Hadebe has tendered his resignation and will be leaving the debt-laden power utility at the end of July, deepening a crisis that many has described as the biggest present day threat to the economy.

“It is no secret that this role comes with unimaginable demands which have unfortunately had a negative impact on my health,” the outgoing CEO said in his statement.

At the end of March, Eskom’s debt stood at R440bn and it isn’t selling enough electricity to cover its interest payments and operational costs, according to the company. The utility was at the center of an alleged looting spree that mainly targeted state companies during the ignominious tenure of former president Jacob Zuma.

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, who, as part of his duties, oversees Eskom, wouldn’t comment on Hadebe’s departure. According to his spokesperson, the issue with regards to the resignation is an issue that is for the board to deal with.

While the resignation may be a negative factor in the short term, as it would likely disrupt the leadership at the power utility, it does provide an opportunity. The newly elected President Ramaphosa and the board will now be tasked with the decision of entrusting the massive job at hand with someone that could potentially address the massive operational and financial issues.

NERSA has recently approved and allowed a tariff increase this year, 2019/2020. Eskom direct customers having an increase of 13.87% and municipal clients having an increase of 15.63% effective as of the first of July, 2019. However, these are not the only increases residents should be aware about.

Major cities around South Africa has tabled their budgets. We’ll be comparing how 3 of South Africa’s biggest cities fair in terms of the various increases residents can expect going forward:

Electricity

These three cities has proposed tariff structures in which they absorb some of the weight put down by the July tariff increase. In the City of Johannesburg, residents can expect an increase of 12.2%, Durban residents can expect an 14.4% increase. While Cape Town proposed a “controlled increase” model where residents will cough up a mere 8.8% more, with the city proposing to subsidize the rest, paying 15.63% more for bulk electricity.

Property Rates

There are also an expected increase in property rates across these 3 cities. Increases for Durban property rates are set to be tabled for 6.9% while the City of Johannesburg residents can expect an increase in property rates of 5.5%. The City of Cape Town has stepped rates which is dependent on property value.

Water

The rates for the use of water is also set for an increase. The price of water in Durban is proposed to be increased by 15% for residential users and 15.5% for businesses. The City of Cape Town proposes and increase of 9% while the City of Johannesburg proposed an increase of 9.9%

Refuse Collection

In Durban, residents can expect to pay 9.9% more to have the refuse removed. Johannesburg proposed an increase of 7%, meanwhile in Cape Town, they’ve actually proposed a decrease, down to 5.0% from 5.7%

Higher food, fuel and electricity prices are set to make it a really tough year consumers. Important to bare in mind, these are mere proposals under scrutiny, included in their budget drafts for the year to come.
