Electricity is a significant household expense, and with rising costs, it’s essential to find practical ways to reduce consumption. Whether you’re looking to lower your monthly bill or adopt more sustainable habits, here are some simple steps South Africans can take to save electricity and money.

Key Tips for Saving Electricity

Seal Gaps in Doors and Windows

Prevent cool air from escaping by sealing gaps around doors and windows with weather stripping or caulk.

This minimizes the strain on your air conditioning or heating system.

Use Energy-Efficient Lighting

Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs or CFLs.

Consider installing motion sensors or timers to ensure lights are only on when needed.

Switch Off Appliances Not in Use

Turn off lights, TVs, and other devices when not in use.

Unplug chargers and appliances to prevent “vampire” energy consumption.

Optimize Your Geyser

Lower your geyser’s thermostat to 55–60°C.

Insulate the geyser and pipes to retain heat longer, reducing energy usage.

Cook Smart

Use a pressure cooker or microwave, which consume less energy than ovens or stovetops.

Batch cook meals and reheat portions instead of cooking every day.

Leverage Natural Light

Open curtains during the day to light up your home naturally.

Close them in the evening to retain warmth in winter or keep heat out in summer.

Install Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans circulate air, helping to cool or warm your home.

Use fans instead of air conditioners whenever possible.

Invest in Energy-Efficient Appliances

Look for appliances with an ENERGY STAR rating.

While they might cost more upfront, they save electricity in the long run.

Wash Smarter

Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.

Air-dry laundry instead of using a tumble dryer.

Maintain Your Appliances

Clean air conditioner filters regularly to improve efficiency.

Service your appliances to ensure they run at optimal performance.

Saving electricity doesn’t require drastic lifestyle changes—it’s about making smarter choices daily. By adopting these energy-saving habits, South Africans can reduce their electricity bills, contribute to a greener environment, and make their households more efficient. Start small, and watch the savings add up!

Although a power strip helps us to save energy and to connect multiple appliances/ devices into one receptacle, a power strip cannot support high-capacity appliances.

An appliance doesn’t need to be big to require large amounts of power.

What are the appliances that cannot be plugged into a power strip.

Rice cookers

Blenders

Slow cookers

Refrigerators

Washing machines

dryers

Air conditioners

Microwave ovens

Toasters

Coffee makers

Don’t “daisy chain” or plug another Power strip to a power strip.

For your safety, while It might take a lot of work to do some rearranging of things, it is better to unplug what is hogging/plugged into the wall and to plug the above items into the wall outlet than to plug them into a power strip.

An electrical fire is simply a failure or malfunction of an electrical component or wiring that can lead to an electrical fire.

Although it can simply be a faulty wiring cable, electrical fires are more frequent than you may think.

We can never be 100% safe, so what are the best quick ways to put out an electrical fire?

How to put out an electrical fire?

Use an extinguisher.

Electrical fires are classified in the class c group of fire, so using a Class C extinguisher which is mainly to put out electrical equipment, appliance, and wiring cables will help to put out the fire once it started.

But please note that any ABC fire extinguisher can do the work.

Turn off the electricity or unplug where it’s possible.

The 1st thing to do when you notice an electrical fire in any type of house (residential, commercial, or industrial) is to unplug or power off the electricity where it’s possible.

By unplugging or disconnecting from the source of the electricity you are not only stopping the source of the fire but also reducing the risk of electrocution.

Use a fire blanket to stop small fires.

Fire blankets are accessible and cheap, they are suitable for fires that cannot be extinguished with water such as electrical fires.

Use baking soda.

Is there something that baking soda cannot fix?

Banking soda contains an element also find on extinguishers called sodium bicarbonate. Which can help to put out or stop a small fire.

For example, when an appliance such as a sandwich toaster catches on fire, you can turn it off/ put it off by simply smothering the flames with banking soda.

Call emergency support.

If you are unable to access or control the fire, don’t hesitate to contact the emergency support of your region.

It’s advisable to even when the fire is under control to contact either an electrician or emergency support to identify what was the cause and to prevent it to happen again.

Yes! That’s right, Insulation doesn’t only keep your house warm during summer. Because it acts as a thermal barrier by blocking cool indoor air from escaping the house and by acting as a barrier for warm outdoor air from getting inside the house.

2. Keep your doors and windows closed

The best way is to open windows and doors that are not affected by the sun, in order to create a form of natural ventilation, or you can also open windows and doors during the night in order to let cold air/temperature to get inside the house.

3. Make use of your hot water bottle

A simple trick is to fill up your hot water bottle with tap water and ice, leaving it in the fridge for a couple of hours.

Once done you can place it anywhere on the surface of your body to lower your body temperature.

4. Close your blinds

It’s advised to keep your blinds closed on the west and north-facing windows to significantly lower the temperature and keep your home cool.

You can also purchase block-out curtains to protect your home from the summer sun.

5. Change out your bed sheets

Your choice of bed sheet is really important, Cotton fabrics are super breathable and help you to reduce the temperature and to cool your body. Make use of cotton sheets for your bed to maximize comfort and also to reduce and beat the heat while you are sleeping.

But to effectively beat the heat you can also use linen, bamboo, or percale sheets.

6. Avoid using the oven/stove

Because cooking in the kitchen can generate excess heat which in the end will raise the temperature inside the house.

You cook outside when you can just to avoid raising the temperature inside the house.

This will help you to save some money on your electricity bills in all seasons.

7. Plant foliage around your house

Foliage and small/big trees play the role of a barrier against the sunlight.

Note that it doesn’t grow in a few weeks, so you might have to wait for a small period depending on what you have planted.

The heating and cooling system

Although being a lifesaver our heater or air-conditioner is considered one of the most electricity consumers. When used they can take up to ~40% of our electricity.

Kettle

Although small appliances, the kettle always makes sure to use a lot of our electricity.

It’s always advisable to boil only the quantity of water, you would like to use.

Refrigerator

The refrigerator seems to not use a lot of power but because it’s always on, it’s considered to use a lot of electricity. On average around 10 % of our electricity usage.

Lighting

In the past few years, we have noticed progress in the lighting sector.

From using the CFLs and incandescent bulbs to LEDs.

LED lights help us to save more energy.

Make sure to change all your old CFLs and bulb lights to LEDs lights.

Electric oven

An electric oven takes about ~4% of your electricity usage. When possible, use the microwave for less consumption.

Microwave

Although small, the microwave consumes enough of your energy bill.

Dishwasher

On average, a good dishwasher uses 1.3 kWh, which can significantly impact your electricity bill at the end of the month

Washing Machine

Yes! Your washing machine also forms part of the top 10!

Make you of it when needed.

TV and cable box

Although considered to be energy efficient, your TV and cable box use an average of 2% of your electricity bills per day.

Toaster

Toaster use up to 0,6 % of your electricity bill in about 1KW, so the more toasty you like your bread, the more expensive your electricity bill become.
